Journeys · Gorilla Trekking
An hour with a family that knows you are there.
Forest journeys in Uganda and Rwanda to spend one permitted hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family — the most intimate wildlife encounter on the continent.

The proposition
Not a sighting. A visit.
There are just over a thousand mountain gorillas left on earth, living in the rainforests of Uganda’s Bwindi and Mgahinga and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. A small number of families have been gently habituated to allow a single hour of human company each day. You trek to them — through steep, wet, beautiful forest — and sit, quietly, while they live around you. It is not a performance and it is not guaranteed. It is a privilege, held to strict rules, and it changes how you see your place in the natural world.
Where you trek
Uganda and Rwanda — two countries, one forest.
The Virunga volcanoes span the border. Each country offers a distinct forest and a distinct rhythm of trekking.
Uganda · Bwindi
An ancient, dense rainforest holding roughly half the world’s mountain gorillas across many habituated families.
Uganda · Mgahinga
The bamboo slopes of the Virungas — smaller, with golden monkey tracking available alongside the gorillas.
Rwanda · Volcanoes NP
The bamboo and hagenia forests of the Virungas, with a refined, well-managed trekking programme.

What the encounter feels like.
Preparation & etiquette
Fit enough to trek. Quiet enough to stay.
Gorilla trekking is physical, and it is governed by rules that protect the families.
Sightings can never be guaranteed. The gorillas are wild, and the forest decides the day. We manage expectations honestly and design around the best chance of a meaningful encounter.
Fitness
Steep, muddy terrain at altitude. A reasonable level of fitness is needed — porters can be hired to carry your bag and help you on the trail.
Permits
Limited and arranged well in advance. We secure your permit and choose the right sector for your fitness and dates.
Respectful distance
A strict minimum distance is kept, and face masks are worn to protect the gorillas from human illness.
Quiet presence
Low voices, no flash, no sudden movement. The hour belongs to the gorillas — we are their guests.
Who the journey suits
Travellers who can be still.
Those comfortable with physical effort, mud and uncertainty. Travellers who want depth over spectacle. It is not an experience for young children — we will advise honestly on age and mobility.
Combinations
Add a safari, or a cultural journey.
Gorilla trekking pairs well with a classic safari in Tanzania or Kenya, or with chimpanzee tracking and cultural visits in Uganda and Rwanda. One journey can hold forest, savannah and coast.
