Volcanoes National Park
Five forested Virunga volcanoes rising above the Rwandan highlands, and Rwanda’s home of the mountain gorilla — a refined, closely managed trekking experience through bamboo and hagenia to a habituated family.

The Virungas
Five volcanoes and the mountain gorilla.
Volcanoes National Park is the Rwandan home of the mountain gorilla — five forested Virunga volcanoes cloaked in montane forest, bamboo and giant hagenia. The trek, from highland headquarters through emerald farms and bamboo, is as beautiful as the encounter it leads to. Rwanda’s gorilla programme is closely managed — small trekking groups, premium permits, habituated families — and the encounter is on the gorillas’ terms.
What Volcanoes is known for
Gorillas, Virunga landscape and golden monkeys.
Mountain gorilla trekking
Habituated families visited in small groups for a permitted hour.
The Virunga landscape
Five forested volcanoes — a montane landscape shared with Uganda and the DRC.
Golden monkey tracking
An endemic primate of the bamboo zone, tracked separately.
Montane forest
Bamboo, hagenia and high-altitude forest — wet and beautiful year-round.
Prepare honestly
A physical walk at altitude.
Trekking in Volcanoes is a physical walk at altitude — through bamboo and forest that is wet year-round. Times and distances vary with where the family is found that day. We advise honest preparation: sturdy footwear, layers, walking poles and a realistic sense of your fitness. The trek is the experience, not just the means to the encounter.
Permits and timing
Premium permits, one hour, assigned families.
Permits required and limited
Premium permits are required, limited and subject to availability; we manage procurement and advise on current pricing.
No guaranteed family allocation
Which gorilla family you trek to is assigned by park authorities — not chosen in advance.
One hour, strictly
A permitted hour with the family, at a respectful distance.
Seasonal timing
Two dry windows suit trekking; montane forest is wet year-round.
On the gorillas’ terms
A brief, humble witness.
Encounters are managed for the gorillas’ wellbeing: a maximum of eight visitors, one hour, a minimum distance, and strict health guidance. We brief every guest beforehand. The gorillas are wild and sightings are never guaranteed — the forest and the families decide, and we keep the encounter respectful.
When to consider travelling
Two dry windows — but montane forest is wet year-round.
Indicative periods; mist and rain are never absent here.
June to September
Dry trekking season
The driest months for gorilla trekking — though montane forest is wet year-round.
December to February
Short dry window
A second dry period; good for forest trekking.
March to May, October to November
Green rains
Misted, dramatic landscapes; fewer trekkers and wetter conditions.
Gorilla sightings, trek duration, family allocation, weather and permit availability are never guaranteed. Rain is possible year-round. Permits are required, limited and subject to current authority pricing.
How it combines
With Akagera, Nyungwe — or Uganda’s Bwindi.
Volcanoes combines with Akagera’s savannah and Nyungwe’s rainforest within Rwanda, and with Uganda’s Bwindi across the border for a cross-border great-ape arc. Kigali is a deliberate stop on the way in or out.
