Why Rwanda
Small country, considered journeys.
Rwanda's character is its compactness and care. The Virunga volcanoes rise in the north-west with habituated mountain gorilla families; Akagera's savannah and lakes hold a recovering Big Five; Nyungwe's ancient rainforest hides chimpanzees and a high canopy walkway; and Kigali is one of Africa's cleanest, greenest capitals. A short journey here can move between forest, savannah and city - and feel complete rather than rushed.
Rwanda destination index
Where to go in Rwanda.
Three destinations, each with its own character — start here and follow where your curiosity leads.
The Virunga volcanoes and a refined, closely managed mountain gorilla trek through bamboo and hagenia.
Key places - Volcanoes National Park
The Virungas and the mountain gorilla.
Volcanoes National Park is the Rwandan home of the mountain gorilla - five forested volcanoes, bamboo and hagenia, and habituated families visited in small trekking groups. The trek itself, from highland headquarters through emerald farms and bamboo, is as beautiful as the encounter it leads to. Permits are required and limited; we manage procurement and advise on current pricing and availability. See the Volcanoes National Park destination page for the full picture.

Key places - Akagera and Nyungwe
Savannah revival and ancient forest.
Akagera, in the east, is a conservation recovery story - lion and rhino reintroduced to a savannah of lakes and papyrus, with boat safaris on Lake Ihema. In the south-west, Nyungwe is one of Africa's oldest montane rainforests: chimpanzees, a 50-metre canopy walkway and hundreds of bird species. Together with the Virungas they make a varied, compact Rwanda arc.
Key places - Kigali
A capital worth stopping in.
Kigali is a quiet, deliberate gateway - clean and green, with a moving genocide memorial, a growing culinary scene and hillside neighbourhoods. We build in a deliberate stop rather than a pass-through, before the scenic drive north-west to the Volcanoes.

Rwanda's compact size is its journey advantage.

The Virunga volcanoes and montane forest - mountain gorilla and golden monkey country.
Akagera National Park
Rwanda's savannah - lake, papyrus and a Big Five conservation revival.
Nyungwe Forest
Ancient montane rainforest, a canopy walkway and chimpanzee tracking.
Kigali
A clean, green capital and gateway - worth a deliberate stop.
Signature experiences
What a Rwanda journey can hold.
Gorilla trekking
A permitted hour with a habituated Virunga mountain gorilla family.
Golden monkey tracking
An endemic primate of the Virunga bamboo zone.
Nyungwe canopy walk
A walkway suspended high in an ancient rainforest.
Akagera Big Five
Lion and rhino reintroduced to a recovering savannah.
When to travel
Mist and dry windows.
Two dry windows suit trekking - but montane forest is wet year-round.
June to September
Dry trekking season
The driest months for gorilla and chimp trekking - though montane forest is wet year-round.
December to February
Short dry window
A second, shorter dry period; good for forest trekking and savannah.
March to May, October to November
Green rains
Rains green the hills; fewer trekkers and dramatic, misted landscapes.
Rain is possible in Rwanda's montane forest at any time. Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are required, limited and subject to availability and current authority pricing - we manage procurement and advise on timing.
Who Rwanda may suit
A country for focused, refined journeys.
Short, focused journeys
Rwanda's compact size suits a few focused nights rather than a long circuit.
Gorilla focus
Travellers whose priority is a single, refined gorilla encounter.
Conservation-minded
Those drawn by Rwanda's recovery and conservation story.
First-time primates
A gentler, more refined entry to gorilla trekking.
Conservation context
A country that chose to protect what it has.
Rwanda's conservation story is part of its journey. Mountain gorilla numbers have recovered through closely managed, permit-funded trekking; Akagera's savannah has been restored through reintroduction; and plastic is widely restricted nationwide. Travelling here contributes to that recovery - and we keep the footprint low and the benefit local.
Journey combinations
A focused Rwanda arc - or cross to Uganda.
Rwanda combines within itself and with Uganda's Bwindi.
