Uganda · Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park
Where the Victoria Nile is compressed through a narrow cleft before broadening into savannah below — boat safaris beneath the falls, game drives on the northern bank, and one of Uganda’s most elemental landscapes.
The Nile and the falls
The river, forced through stone.
At Murchison Falls the Victoria Nile is compressed through a narrow cleft before opening out into savannah below. The boat safari from Paraa to the foot of the falls is the park’s signature experience — hippo pods, Nile crocodiles, elephant at the water’s edge and the rare shoebill in the papyrus. Above, the northern bank holds open savannah game drives.
What the park is known for
Falls, boat and northern savannah.
The Nile and Murchison Falls
The Victoria Nile compressed through a narrow cleft — the park’s defining feature.
Boat safaris
A cruise to the foot of the falls past hippo, crocodile and elephant.
Northern savannah
Game drives on the north bank for giraffe, lion, elephant and buffalo.
Shoebill country
Papyrus swamps holding the rare shoebill stork.
Honest scale
Rewarding, not guaranteed.
Murchison is rewarding without being predictable. Game drives meet giraffe, buffalo, elephant and sometimes lion; the boat delivers hippo and crocodile reliably and shoebill less so. We do not overstate water volume, wildlife density or the ease of the roads — the falls are powerful, and the park is Uganda’s largest, but the experience is read patiently.
Journey pacing and transfers
Pace it by air where it fits.
Transfer considerations
Murchison is in the north-west; road transfers are real and we often pace them by air where it fits.
Longer stays rewarded
A single night sells the park short; we build time for the falls, the boat and the north bank.
Falls hike
A guided walk to the top of the falls is possible where conditions allow.
Fly-in option
Where the journey benefits, fly-in transfers reduce long road hours.
When to consider travelling
Concentrate at water in the dry months.
Two dry windows; road conditions vary with the rains.
December to February, June to September
Dry season
Game concentrates at water; the main window for game drives and the boat.
March to May, October to November
Green rains
Greener, fewer visitors, wetter roads.
We do not overstate water volume or wildlife density. Road conditions vary and transfer times are not exact. Sightings are never guaranteed.
How it combines
A northern counterpoint to the forest.
Murchison is a powerful contrast to Bwindi and Kibale — the open Nile and savannah after the quiet of the rainforest. It pairs with Kidepo Valley for a northern Uganda arc, or stands alone as the river chapter of a wider journey.
