A road through dense rainforest

Rwanda · Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe Forest

One of Africa’s oldest montane rainforests, in Rwanda’s south-west — chimpanzees, thirteen primate species, a high canopy walkway, and a cathedral of ancient trees at the continent’s hydrological heart.

East Africa, intimately known↓

Ancient rainforest

A cathedral of ancient trees.

Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest and largest montane rainforests — ancient trees, mist and extraordinary biodiversity in Rwanda’s south-west. It holds chimpanzees, thirteen primate species and hundreds of birds. It is quieter than the gorilla parks, and rewards travellers who want a deeper forest chapter — read slowly, and with realistic expectations about what the forest will and will not show.

What Nyungwe is known for

Chimps, primates and a canopy above.

01

Chimpanzee trekking

Habituated chimpanzees tracked on foot — sightings never guaranteed.

02

Montane rainforest

One of Africa’s oldest montane forests — ancient trees, mist and biodiversity.

03

Canopy walkway

A walkway suspended high in the forest — where available and verified.

04

Thirteen primate species

Including large colobus monkey troops.

Primate forest

Chimps, colobus and a canopy above.

Nyungwe’s chimpanzees are habituated but wild — tracking is a pursuit through forest, with sightings that are never guaranteed. The forest also holds large colobus troops and a canopy walkway suspended high above the floor. The canopy walk is a remarkable perspective where available and verified; we advise on current conditions rather than promising it.

Trekking and weather

Steep, wet and at altitude.

01

Forest trekking

Steep, wet trails at altitude — honest preparation matters.

02

Wet year-round

Montane rainforest keeps its own weather; rain is the norm, not the exception.

03

Canopy conditions

The canopy walkway depends on weather and operational conditions.

04

Biodiversity

Hundreds of birds, orchids and butterflies in a compact forest.

When to consider travelling

Two dry windows — but the forest is wet year-round.

Chimp tracking is possible year-round; trails change with the weather.

June to September

Dry season

The driest months for chimp trekking — though rain is possible year-round.

December to February

Short dry window

A second dry period; good for forest trekking.

March to May, October to November

Green rains

Misted and wet; fewer trekkers.

Chimpanzee sightings, canopy-walk availability, trail conditions and weather are never guaranteed. Rain is possible year-round in the montane forest.

How it combines

The forest third of a Rwanda arc.

Nyungwe pairs with Volcanoes’ gorillas and Akagera’s savannah for a full Rwanda arc — forest, primates and savannah in a compact country. The drive south-west is part of the experience; we pace it so Nyungwe reads as a deliberate forest chapter, not a long detour.
