East Africa, intimately known↓

Northern Kenya

A northern frontier of river and rock.

Samburu is Kenya’s arid north — acacia-lined river, volcanic outcrops, hot light and a landscape that earns its quiet. The Ewaso Ng’iro cuts a ribbon of green through the semi-desert, drawing wildlife to its banks in a concentration that surprises travellers expecting emptiness.

The Ewaso Ng’iro and the land

The river is the lifeline.

Water, light and season shape everything here.

01

The Ewaso Ng’iro

The river is the lifeline — a green corridor through the semi-arid north.

02

Light and heat

Hot, dry and luminous — the light here is part of the experience.

03

Seasonal water

River flow shifts with the rains upstream; wildlife moves with it.

04

A quieter north

Far from the southern circuit crowds — a different Kenya.

Northern wildlife

Species found nowhere else south.

Samburu holds reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, beisa oryx and the Somali ostrich — species of the arid north. They are here, but sightings are never guaranteed; the land is open and the wildlife moves with the water. We read it patiently with guides who know it.

Community context

Samburu is also Samburu land.

The Samburu people share this landscape. Where cultural visits are offered, they are arranged through community-run programmes and on the community’s terms. We do not reduce Samburu identity to costume or performance — the relationship between people and land is the context, not a show.
