Kenya · Tsavo East & West

Tsavo, Kenya at its most expansive

Two parks under one name — and they are different. Tsavo East is open, red and dry; Tsavo West is volcanic, rugged and bushed. The scale is the point, and the reason these journeys are paced by air and with time.

East Africa, intimately known↓

East and West

Two parks, one name — and they are different.

Tsavo is divided into East and West, and the division matters. Tsavo East is open, dry and red — galloping plains and the dust that gives its elephants their colour. Tsavo West is more broken: volcanic cones, lava flows, springs and thicker bush. Most journeys choose one, or move between them slowly. They are not the same place with a line between them.

East and West

Two distinct landscapes.

The choice of half changes the journey.

01

Tsavo East

Open, dry and red; large elephant herds and the Galana River.

02

Tsavo West

Volcanic, rugged and bushy; Mzima Springs and the Ngulia rhino sanctuary.

03

Scale and logistics

Tsavo is large and distances are real — we pace it honestly, often by air.

04

Water sources

Springs and rivers shape where wildlife gathers through the dry months.

Landscape

Red earth, lava and a wild scale.

The red soil of Tsavo East dusts its elephants in its own colour; the Shetani lava flows and volcanic cones of Tsavo West mark a landscape that feels genuinely untamed. The scale is the point — and the reason we pace these journeys by air and with longer drives, not as a quick stop.

Pacing and distance

Tsavo rewards time, not a quick stop.

Distance is real here; we plan accordingly.

01

Fly-in pacing

Distances make fly-in transfers the honest choice between Tsavo and other parks.

02

Longer stays

A single quick night sells Tsavo short; we build in time to read its scale.

03

Night drives

Where permitted, night drives open a different Tsavo.

04

Conservation areas

Tsavo sits within broader community and protected landscapes; arrangements vary.

When to travel

Dry and open, or hot and green.

Wildlife concentrates at water in the dry months.

June to October

Dry season

Dry and open; wildlife concentrated at water.

January to March

Hot and dry

Hot; a second window.

April to May

Long rains

Green and quieter; some lodges close.

We do not make unsupported scale claims for Tsavo; distances are real and we pace accordingly.
