The Destination
Volcanoes National Park is where Dian Fossey gave her life to protect the mountain gorilla — and where her work has borne extraordinary fruit. Rwanda's gorilla trekking programme is arguably the most refined in East Africa: premium permits, expertly managed trekking groups of maximum eight, and habituated families that treat humans as a mild curiosity.
The five Virunga volcanoes rise dramatically above the Rwandan highlands, cloaked in montane forest and bamboo. The trek itself — from misty highlands through bamboo groves and giant hagenia trees — is as beautiful as the encounter it leads to. AT ONE partners with Rwanda's finest lodges to place guests in the heart of this landscape, with access to the best-positioned families.
