The Destination

Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem — and during the months of July through October, it becomes the most dramatic wildlife stage on the planet. The Mara River bisects this savannah of rolling golden grass, and it is here that the wildebeest migration reaches its crescendo: thunderous crossings, half a million animals surging through crocodile-filled waters, all witnessed from the Kenyan side of the border.

Beyond the migration, the Mara holds one of Africa's highest densities of resident predators. Lion prides here are famous — large, bold, and photogenic. The Marsh Pride, documented for decades, is the stuff of wildlife legend. Cheetahs chase prey across open plains. Leopards drape themselves over sausage trees along the Mara River.
