The Destination
Nyerere National Park — formerly the northern block of the Selous Game Reserve — is one of Africa's last truly wild places. Covering 54,000 square kilometres, it is larger than Switzerland and home to one of the continent's largest concentrations of elephant, hippo, and crocodile.
What makes Nyerere unique is the diversity of activities available: game drives along the Rufiji River bank, boat safaris weaving through channels past hippo pods and crocodile, and walking safaris through terrain that has remained unchanged for millennia.
The park is best accessed by fly-in from Dar es Salaam or Arusha — a 45-minute flight that delivers guests immediately into the wilderness. AT ONE operates exclusively fly-in programmes here, with private camps in the most secluded areas.

"The Rufiji River is the artery of this wilderness — and from the boat, Africa unfolds on both banks simultaneously."
The Wildlife
African Wild Dog
Nyerere hosts one of Africa's largest wild dog populations — pack sightings are among the park's greatest highlights.
Hippo
Thousands of hippo crowd the Rufiji channels — best seen on boat safari at sunrise.
Crocodile
Nile crocodiles reach immense sizes in the Rufiji. Boat safari brings you within metres of these ancient reptiles.
Elephant
Large migratory herds move through seasonally. The southern circuit holds some of Tanzania's largest elephants.
Lion
Relaxed, undisturbed prides inhabit the open floodplains. Less vehicle traffic means more natural behaviour.
Sable Antelope
The magnificent sable — rare in northern Tanzania — is regularly seen in Nyerere's open woodlands.
